Summary:Bryan Officially Retires
I started this project quite some time ago, when my life was very different. Since then, I've become a father and my business has fallen apart like many dot coms and I've had to get a day job.
I havn't had time to work on SE forever and haven't taken good care of this community since the early days of building the game. I appologize for that.
When I first started this project banner ads were worth something and I hoped to make enough money off of them to have a commercial game and even hired a programmer at one time. After it became clear that that wasn't going to happen I open sourced everything so that the project wouldn't die on my hard drive. I havn't been able to spend as much time as I had hoped on the project and with delays from sourceforge on a variety of issues I ran out of steam and intrest in the project.
I have heard of the SE2 project and it has my blesssings. I hope it does well, however I don't nessisarily feel that the original SE needs to be thrown away. A talented programmer could probably clean everything up in a week if he was interested and dedicated to it. One of the big things that killed SE was the failure to use CVS correctly. With only one or two real developers who had difficult access to it it just didn't happen right. What SE really needs is a new project manager and I encourage someone to post some job postings on sourceforge as I got really good results with them.
Some of the great things that worked out in Solar Empire was the economy. I really liked how you didn't have to do a bunch of busywork like there was in the original tradewars. I also love how much the community has been there. It's great to have fans who love the game so much. I think the feel of the game is excelent and captures the excitment that was always there in tradewars.
One of the things that never really got fixed was the game cycle. In tradewars the games lasted forever and that worked well for BBSes, but it just didn't work on the net as well, so that's something to look for in SE2 and maybe taken a look at in SE. If I were to do it over again I would aim for a game that had a defanite start and finish, perhaps making everyone part of different races that had to battle and eliminate the other teams.
I'll keep control of the domain for now, I may turn it over to the SE2 project if it does well enough, or I may give it to the SE project managers if the game is still being run. Wolfden will still be up and running for the forseeable future. It's not my hardware so it's really Randee's (rshirts@hotmail.com on MSN messanger) decision as to what happens to that.
I've been working on a new game that is quite different and available at http://www.globalcombat.com I invite everyone to check it out. I have some exciting ideas on how to give away big cash prizes to the top players each month in this new game and hopefully it will turn into a thriving business and maybe even have a small group of professional gamers.
Thank you everyone for the good times. This was really an enjoyable project and I hope everyone had fun.

Posted By: kilercris Date: 2001-07-03 21:01 Summary:Solar Empire 2Solar Empire 2 is currently in planning. Many people do not like the way Solar Empire has gone and think it could be much better. The new game will be written from scratch due to the bugginess and crap in the current game. This will be a seperate game and the development of Solar Empire should be continued normally and I will continue working on it when SE2 is doneish. Anyone interested in helping with SE2 in any way, from programming to recommending stuff(moriarty need not apply, sorry, but your views are too different from everyone elses) psot on the Developer Request forum http://sourceforge.net/projects/solar-empire-2/ |
Solar Empire 2 Finale
Solar Empire 2 was basicallty an abortion from the very beginning. There never was anything other some big ego trip behind it.

As of 2006-09-14 0:00:00 UTC, this project is no longer under active development.
A new version from scratch of Solar Empire. We want to produce a more efficient, bug free game with the same concepts and design as the orignal SE.
