Hey, I see that this list is none too busy. Is anyone

Just a note for everyone on my use of the SE source
code. A few weeks ago (or is it months?) I emailed
Moriarty, one of the developers, about the possibility
of adapting the SE game into a planet based strategy
game entitled "Crystal Wars". I've managed to get
together a small team and we are working in our spare
time on it. Despite early doubts we are confident that
the game will continue to be developed incorporating
as required our own enhancements and ideas and also
those of updated SE code where necessary. The code for
CW will be made public in the future as is required
under the license for SE and I look forward to opening
the game to the public.
CW will of course ensure that SE is fully promoted on
our website and we hope that SE continues to be a
great success.
An attachment to this email contains a draft storyline
based on a shortstory I wrote which first sparked the
idea of creating the game.

Solar-Empire Adapted Game - Sorcery: The Crystal Wars
Using v0.008 Solar-Empire source code (adapted: being developed)
<?
From: Patrick Brady,
(Remember the guy who wrote the SE Intro & Story?)
Hi, I'm hoping to use the Solar-empire files to create a game based on the following storyline. I will be adapting the code and believe that Solar-Empires specs and works match almost exactly what I need for the game. Of course, it will still need quite a bit of work to fully adapt from space to planet based, but the 2d map helps. I was wondering what you though of the idea, and if you had any particular advice on the code. I will also, of course, be sure to credit Solar-Empire as being the main basis of any game I actually develop and release. If you have any other condition, please email me.
Excerpts from "Histories Of A Broken World", Karilyn Raelien, Royal Historian to His Majesty, King Damaar Duublugh of Almerigh.
"In the beginning, the Race of Humanity, after countless years of evolution and adaption, conquered the World and ended the rule of the ancient Eldarinn upon this planet. I say the beginning because no account of our glorious rise before this time survived the Crystal Wars, the Wars that pitched the weapons of Science and Human ingenuity against the ancient Magicks of the Eldarinn's Human successors. In fact few coherent accounts of any history from before the Breaking survive.
The Human scientists of that time had in all their Theories of our Universe's Physical Laws failed to acknowledge the fundamental error in their continuing search for the Holy Grail of Science, the Grand Unified Theory of Physics. The error was their blind refusal to recognise the existence of the most powerful force that existed, Magic. Little did they know that its curse lay in wait for them.
In the Year of 2033, one scientist rediscovered this power during routine research in the field of String Theory, and unwittingly released it upon a world that had long since relagated the memory of the ancient conflict with the Eldarinn to myth and children's stories.
Human Science celebrated this new discovery, a victory for Modern Scientific Research, eager to explore its properties. What a shock it must have been to realise that this new energy source could be controlled merely through the exercise of mental willpower and a few months of carefull study. Too late, the Government of our beloved Almerigh sought to halt research into the power until its dangers could be assessed.
In 2037, despite the proposal of a ban on research by His Majesty, King Georjsh Dubluugh III, a band of Scientists published the first edition of "A Bible for Scientific Research: The Universal Power". The book contained an indepth study of the correlation between mythological "Sorcerous Abilty" and the abilities of those who used the new-found Universal Power. It stunned the world. Within a month, the authors formed the LSPS, The League of Scientific Practitioners of Sorcery. The Sorcerors, heirs to the long dead power of the Eldarinn, had finally arrived. Within 17 years, the World as it was would be Broken..."

"The Crystal Wars began across the Ocean in the present day Wasteland of Cursed Europa. In the Mountains of Alpola a reseach team of the LSPS, now calling themselves Sorcerors discovered the existence of a deposit of Hematite Crystal, that actually seemed to contain a vast amount of concentrated of the Universal Power, already being referred to at this time as Magic. The research team was attacked a week later by a group of rival Sorcerors who stole the Hematite Crystals and fled to Afrik, in the south. The LSPS was in chaos as they argued over what to do. The result was a split in the ranks, with a third of the organisation forming the Organisation that gave rise to our present day protectors, the Mages.
New deposits of this rare form of Hematite were soon found, often squirrelled away in museams, universities or other places where Mineralology or Geology were practised. These Crystals fast became a highly demanded Power source by Industry and the Public. Although the Crystals eventually became exhausted of their pent up power, new research made finding virgin deposits a reasonably simple process.
Within a few years with the Mages and Sorcerors still at each others' throats over the still hiding runaway Sorcerors and their actions, the Crystals had become a major source of energy dominated by the growing power of the LSPS. A sudden decrease in the availability of Crystal Deposits led to Government intervention to fix the price of this suddenly rare energy source.
The Sorcerors, continually growing more aggressive, with rumours of illegal activities and alledged sightings of Satanic-like ceremonies dogging their every move, retaliated against the new laws. They used their immense power to launch a Magical attack on the city of Washintal-Disii, our mighty capital. The Crystal Wars had begun..."

Although our city survived, mainly due to the defensive power of the Mages who had even then made our capital the Home of their organisation, it became apparent that the Sorcerors had designs upon destroying our government. The King's spymasters discovered plots aimed at overthrowing his rule in a bid to control the most powerful Kingdom in the World. Needless to say, King Georjsh was not about to let this go unheeded. The Almerigh Army, armed with the most technologically advanced weapons then in existence were sent to Europa to back up the Europan Union's forces in their intent to capture the Sorcerors.
The resulting war lasted 3 years. Australis, Canaad, Braziil, Cjinn, Afric and Rusaal all sent aid to the Europan front where the Sorcerors had gathered in their tens of thousands. Mages fought on our side against the unmasked evil of the Sorcerors. As the war played out the Mages discovered a unsuspected side-effect of using Crystals. Hematite Crystals because of their Iron content had an odd ability to absorb a users Lifeforce and corrupt those who survived, driving them close to insanity. At last the actions of the Sorcerors could be explained if not prevented. How the Mages had remained seemingly unaffected could not be explained, but one Theory revolved around the idea that Mages rarely used Crystals directly, preferring to use Crystal powered technology instead, such as Mystech Weapons and new Anti-Grav Vehicles.
As the end of the Wars grew nearer, Europa became a smoking ruin with few cities remaining intact. The Europans had almost all been enslaved by the Sorcerors. Asiia, Australis and Afrik were close to falling apart as their economies collapsed one by one. Driven to despair, a desperate Almerigh and Cjinn alliance engendered a dreadful plan. In preparation, they ordered their forces to retreat. Other Countries followed their example.
In the Kingdom of Britannia, Europan refugees cluttered the cities of one of the last remaining Free Zones in Europa. Next to them, the Land of Eire, also a Free Zone, secretly sent a small elite force of men and women in search of the Sorceror's Main Base on Europa's Mainland. Oddly at the time, a number of Europa's individual peoples also joined the force as its moved across the continent. Francs, Spaniards, Welsh, Albans(Scots) and a full thousand Almerighs banded with them.
A week later, the first bombs began to fall...

Nuclear Bombs. From Cjinn and Almerigh they flew, silver birds of ultimate destruction. Paris, Berlin and countless others perished in the onslaught, vaporised or blasted from existence in an effort to root out the Sorceror threat. On the third day, the Mages sensed the force of Europans and Almerighs as they entered the Alpal Foothills. Magic clung to their every action, more powerful than anything even the Sorceror's had achieved. The Mages were worried, especially when the learned that Britannia and Eire had stopped all communication after each sending the same identical message.
'By the seven elements of creation, we curse our foes. They will perish by fire and by the power of the Allfather. They will be damned to the eternity where hated Crom and the Twelve Lords are imprisoned. By all the Gods that are we swear it. By sea, by fire, by wind and by life-giving earth, the Blessed of Danu shall send them to oblivion.'
And so it was, dear reader, that the Mages discovered the existence of the Druids. When the end came it was devastating. The land heaved and the seas swelled. The Sorcerors launched their own bombs against us even as the Druids picked apart their defences and slaughtered them. When that final terrible day ended a full 2 thirds of the Earth was uninhabitable. Billions are believed to have died and the Druids simply vanished."
"Now, almost 4 decades after the Crystal Wars ended, we are preparing to return life to the Wastelands. Other nations do the same. No longer able to support our starving populations, we must all expand into the Wastelands. But it will not be a peacefull expansion. By International Agreement the Free City of Utopia, the new Home of the Mages, in Almerigh is above the quarrels of nations. Over the next few months, countless expeditions will set out from there with Crystal Powered Anti-Grav Ships that cross water and land with equal ease. Once outside the boundaries of the Free City and far from their native borders, I fear a new war may errupt as the colonists compete for rare resources and the precious remains of Hydrocarbon Fuels and Crystal Deposits that may exist upon the blighted lands and island-dotted oceans. I can only pray that peace remains between the Clans of Allied Colonists that are even now springing into existance in an effort to secure their survival in what will be a wild unknown journey into the unknown. Without space-capabilities, we are unable to replace lost satelites from the Breaking so we can map out the altered face of a planet stricken by nuclear holocaust. Earthquakes and changing weather are sure to have made our decades old maps useless. And of course other unkowns exist, such as if Sorcerors still exist and where are the Druids?..."

From Scott Vanderlaan April 6 2001:
I am out here. I admit that I'm not to sure what all SE is, but it looks
interesting, and I'll be paying attention to figure out all I can about this
game. I haven't yet got it running, but that's probably due to me fighting
the NT O/S more than any problems with the game.
Thanks for taking your time to develop these games and I will attempt to do
my part by giving you feedback and telling others about your game(s).

From Bryan Livingston April 6 2001:
Hi Paddy.
Is your game design so radicly different that it couldn't be integrated into
SE? Combat on the planets would be pretty cool.
As a general rule, we don't forbid new features as long as they can be
turned off.
